China Blocking Gmail: Google

At first, it may have been hard for viewers to discern the far-reaching effects of the pro-democratic wave in North Africa.

There is obvious political unrest in the Middle East, though the situation there remains stable. Perhaps to the surprise of some, China and Russia have been feeling the heat lately, this early evident by their decisions regarding the UN Resolution, which both countries found unfavorable.

Google has accused China of disrupting its Gmail service in the weeks following the revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya.

In investigating the problem, Google reported that there were no technical issues and that this was a government blockage designed to look like a simple problem with Google’s webmail service.

This has not been the first alleged attack by China on Google, who has decided to reduce its presence in the Chinese markets.

This has created tension between China and the United States, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out as Beijing has always denied state involvement in these cyber attacks. Who stands to gain more from these accusations? Google is definitely losing, but it will be interesting to see as to what degree the United States acts upon these accusations, especially amidst the growing conflict in Libya.
